Nationwide Recall of Dietary Supplements After Salmonella Outbreak Sickens 11, Hospitalizes 3

A multistate outbreak of salmonella linked to dietary supplements has prompted a nationwide recall, health officials announced Thursday, after 11 people fell ill and three required hospitalization.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) confirmed that four dietary supplement products, all containing a single lot of organic moringa leaf powder from Vallon Farmdirect in Jodhpur, India, are being recalled. Moringa leaf powder, often marketed for its anti-inflammatory and nutritional properties, has been identified as the source of the outbreak.

The affected products include two offerings from Food To Live, a Brooklyn-based company. Both its Organic Moringa Leaf Powder and Organic Supergreens Powder Mix are being recalled. The Moringa Leaf Powder was sold in a variety of sizes ranging from eight ounces to 44 pounds, with lot codes starting from SO-69006 through SO-72558. Similarly, the Supergreens Powder Mix, available in eight-ounce to 12-pound packages, shares the same lot code range.

These products were sold directly through Food To Live’s website and distributed nationwide. They were also available on major third-party platforms, including Amazon, Walmart, Target, Etsy, and eBay, exposing a broad swath of consumers to potential contamination.

Beyond Food To Live, additional recalls have been issued. Organic Moringa Leaf Powder sold in one-kilogram boxes through Africa Imports’ website after June 5, 2025, is being pulled from the market. Moreover, all Member’s Mark Super Greens dietary supplement powder, irrespective of lot code or best-by date, is included in the recall.

According to the FDA, all four products were manufactured with the same lot of organic moringa leaf powder imported by Vallon Farmdirect. The lot code, VFD/ORG/MORP/L/24, with a best-by date of November 2027, has been directly linked to the illnesses reported in the ongoing investigation coordinated with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

So far, 11 cases of salmonella infection have been reported across Florida, Kansas, Michigan, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. Three individuals required hospitalization. Investigators found that nine out of ten interviewed patients had consumed powdered dietary supplements, while six specifically reported consuming Member’s Mark Super Greens Powder. Three other patients reported ingesting products containing moringa leaf powder.

Salmonella infections typically manifest between 12 and 72 hours after ingestion and can last four to seven days. Common symptoms include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. The CDC warns that young children, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable to severe complications.

Salmonella is the second leading cause of foodborne illness in the United States, resulting annually in approximately 1.35 million infections, 26,500 hospitalizations, and 420 deaths, according to CDC statistics.

This outbreak follows a series of salmonella incidents in the U.S. this year. In September, a multistate outbreak linked to home delivery meal kits from Metabolic Meals led to seven hospitalizations. Affected meals included dishes such as Four Cheese Tortellini with Pesto Sauce and Grilled Chicken, Low Carb Chicken Teriyaki and Vegetables, Black Garlic & Ranch Chicken Tenders with Roasted Vegetables, and Sliced Top Sirloin with Roasted Peanut Sauce and Summer Vegetables.

The FDA has urged consumers to immediately stop using the recalled supplements and dispose of them safely. Individuals who suspect they may have consumed the contaminated products and are experiencing symptoms should seek medical attention promptly.

As dietary supplements continue to grow in popularity, health authorities emphasize the importance of vigilance and proper regulation. The current outbreak underscores the potential risks associated with contaminated supplements and the critical need for consumers to remain alert to product recalls.
